Ayrton Senna / Lotus 99T Race-Used Rear O.Z. Rim Table, 1987 Formula One Season
A singular and historically resonant motorsport artifact, this sculptural table is fashioned from an original rear O.Z. Racing wheel rim used by Ayrton Senna on the Lotus 99T during the 1987 Formula One World Championship season—a pivotal year that marked Senna’s final campaign with Team Lotus and his emergence as one of the sport’s most electrifying talents.
Executed in the unmistakable black-and-gold livery of John Player Team Lotus, the rim retains its period-correct O.Z. Racing branding and authentic race patina. Most notably, it is hand-signed and dated in white marker by Ayrton Senna, directly on the rim surface—an exceptionally rare characteristic, particularly for race-used Lotus components. The autograph remains bold and legible, exhibiting strong, unmistakable traits consistent with Senna’s hand during the late 1980s.
The rim has been elevated into a one-of-one functional artwork, mounted on a bespoke black pedestal stand designed to complement—never compete with—the artifact itself. The presentation is completed with a discreet integrated plaque and accompanying original Lotus Certificate of Authenticity, confirming the rim’s race use and Senna association. The transformation respects the integrity of the original object, preserving its provenance while granting it a new sculptural presence.
Historical Significance
The Lotus 99T represents a crucial chapter in Senna’s career: a technically innovative machine powered by Honda, and the car in which Senna achieved multiple victories in 1987. Race-used rear rims from this period are inherently scarce; examples signed by Senna and preserved with factory-issued authentication are virtually unobtainable.
Rarity
This piece stands at the apex of Formula One memorabilia. Signed race-used Lotus components from Senna’s pre-McLaren years are significantly rarer than later examples, and rear rims—subjected to extreme stress and typically discarded—were seldom retained. The conversion into a table renders this example entirely unique: a true 1-of-1 object, with no comparable counterpart known.
Craftsmanship
The bespoke stand has been executed with curatorial restraint, allowing the rim’s form, signature, and historic markings to remain the focal point. The balance between industrial precision and gallery-level presentation reflects a high level of craftsmanship, transforming an engineering component into a refined collectible suitable for the most discerning private collections.
An irreplaceable tribute to Ayrton Senna’s Lotus era—where raw speed, innovation, and legacy converge in a single, definitive object.

Summary of the race:
The Monte Carlo street circuit has always been a challenge for Formula 1 drivers. For 37 years, no Brazilian had won there. Ayrton Senna came close in 1984 but wanted to celebrate a victory. In 1987, Senna faced more challenges. He retired from two out of three races (Brazil and Belgium) and finished second in San Marino. Lotus had a new, untested active suspension system that could help on Monaco's bumpy track, but it shook the team's confidence. During qualifying, Senna secured second on the grid. Nigel Mansell took pole position, followed by Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost. Michele Alboreto and Eddie Cheever were in the third row. A controversy arose as FISA allowed 26 cars to race, potentially causing a traffic jam in the narrow streets. Usually, the six slowest cars in qualifying didn't race, with only 20 cars competing. But to appease sponsors, all 26 cars started that day. Notably, the front row was a repeat of the previous race where Senna and Mansell had crashed in Belgium. Senna assured the press it wouldn't be a problem, despite the risks. On race day, Mansell kept the lead initially, but on lap 29, his turbocharger failed, forcing him to retire. Senna then took the lead and dominated the race, eventually finishing 33 seconds ahead of Nelson Piquet. Michele Alboreto finished third. Senna's victory marked the first time a Brazilian had won at Monaco, cementing his status as one of Brazil's greatest sports figures. After the checkered flag, Senna relaxed by thanking each team mechanic over the Lotus radio. He explained, "When I couldn't keep up with Mansell, I saved my tires and brakes for the second half. After Mansell retired, I focused on avoiding backmarkers and maintaining concentration." During the celebration, Senna joyfully showered Prince Rainier of Monaco with champagne. Senna would go on to win at Monaco five more times in his career. Afterward, he was invited by the Prince to the Royal Family dinner. This win marked Senna's fifth in Formula One and the first by a car using active suspension. The standings were Prost with 18 points, Senna 15, Johansson 13, Piquet 12, and Mansell 10.

Ayrton Senna’s McLaren Test at Suzuka
Date:8 December 1987 Location:Suzuka Circuit, Japan Team:McLaren-Honda Formula 1 Team Car:McLaren MP4/4 prototype mule, powered by the Honda RA168E V6 turbo engine Purpose: To introduce Senna to McLaren’s car and Honda’s turbo power unit, and begin integration for the 1988 season
Context and Significance
In late 1987, Senna had just completed his final season with Team Lotus, also running Honda engines.
He had already signed with McLaren for 1988, forming the now legendary Senna–Prost–Honda alliance.
Honda arranged a private test at Suzuka, their home circuit, as part of the technical handover between Lotus and McLaren.
This was Senna’s first time driving for McLaren, marking the beginning of the partnership that would yield three World Championships (1988, 1990, 1991).
Evidence and Documentation
The test was covered by Japanese media and McLaren photographers at the time — though not widely publicized in Western outlets.
McLaren-Honda archives and Honda Racing historical notes confirm that both Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna tested at Suzuka during the December 1987 off-season to prepare for the 1988 campaign.
Outcome
Senna reportedly completed several laps in mixed weather, providing early feedback on turbo response and balance. His immediate synergy with Honda’s engineers stood out — they noted his precision, sensitivity, and communication even at this first McLaren test.
Just three months later, in March 1988, he debuted with McLaren at the Brazilian GP — and went on to dominate the season with eight wins and his first World Championship.
The suit exhibits significant signs of use, including visible stains and discoloration, further attesting to its authenticity and historical significance.

GERHARD BERGER Original Ferrari Formula One Helmet, 1987 British Grand Prix, Silverstone Bell XFM-1, race-used
An exceptionally rare and historically significant original racing helmet worn by Gerhard Berger during the 1987 Formula One season with Scuderia Ferrari, and attributed to use at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone—a defining year in which Berger secured his first Grand Prix victory and emerged as one of Formula One’s leading talents.
Manufactured by Bell Helmets, this example is the advanced XFM-1 model, representing the cutting-edge of helmet technology during the mid-1980s turbo era. The helmet is presented in Berger’s striking and unmistakable personal livery: a deep navy blue base, contrasted by bold white and red geometric striping, forming a clean and highly recognizable design synonymous with his early Ferrari career.
The helmet retains its original full-face visor assembly, complete with period-correct fittings, pivot hardware, and tear-off posts. The Carrera branding applied to the chin area reflects period sponsorship alignment, while the overall configuration matches precisely with period photography of Berger seated in the Ferrari cockpit, providing compelling visual confirmation of use.
The shell exhibits clear and consistent evidence of authentic race wear, including surface abrasions, light impacts, and patina accumulated through competition. These marks, far from detracting, enhance the helmet’s integrity as a genuine artifact of Grand Prix racing. The paintwork and decals remain largely intact, with minor age-related wear visible throughout.
The interior remains complete with original lining and fittings, showing expected aging and material fatigue consistent with a race-used helmet of this period. The structure and construction correspond with Bell’s XFM-1 production standards of the era, further supporting authenticity.
Gerhard Berger’s 1987 season with Ferrari marked a pivotal moment in his career, highlighted by his breakthrough victory at the Japanese Grand Prix (Suzuka) and a series of strong performances that established him as a future star. Helmets from this season—particularly those linked to specific Grand Prix events—are of exceptional rarity and desirability.
Condition: Overall very good, with evident and desirable signs of race use. Exterior displays scuffs, scratches, and light wear throughout. Interior shows age-related deterioration consistent with period use. Visor intact with minor wear.
A superb and highly collectible artifact from Ferrari’s turbocharged era, directly associated with Gerhard Berger’s rise to prominence and the raw, uncompromising spirit of 1980s Formula One.
1987 Mika Salo Signed Race Used Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival GPA Helmet

MIKA SALO Original Race-Worn Helmet Formula Ford • Circa 1987 Early Career – Finland
An exceptionally rare and historically significant original helmet worn by Mika Salo during his formative years in Formula Ford competition, circa 1987—representing the very beginning of a career that would later lead to Formula One.
This GPA full-face helmet is presented in Salo’s early, clean and purposeful design: a white base accented by horizontal blue striping, complemented by a “NESTE” visor strip and Finnish flag detailing, proudly reflecting his national identity. Period imagery confirms Salo wearing this exact style of helmet during his junior single-seater career, notably in Formula Ford, where he first established himself as one of Finland’s most promising young drivers.
The helmet shows clear and authentic signs of race use. The shell displays scattered chips, surface abrasions, and race grime consistent with competitive track action. The visor retains age-related wear and light scratching, while the original fittings and fixtures remain intact. Of particular note is the presence of an RAC approval sticker (expired 12/89), firmly placing the helmet within the correct period of use, along with internal manufacturer labeling and serial markings that further support authenticity.
The interior remains original, with visible wear to the lining and padding consistent with prolonged use in period. The helmet has not been restored, preserving its integrity as a genuine competition-used artifact.
Helmets from Mika Salo’s early career are exceptionally scarce. Unlike his later Formula One period, very few items from his Formula Ford and junior formula years have survived, making this a highly desirable piece for collectors focused on driver development history and “first chapter” memorabilia.
A compelling and authentic artifact from the grassroots origins of a Formula One driver—offering a rare opportunity to acquire a helmet from the earliest stage of Mika Salo’s racing journey.
