MIKA SALO
Original Race-Worn Helmet
Formula Ford • Circa 1987
Early Career – Finland
An exceptionally rare and historically significant original helmet worn by Mika Salo during his formative years in Formula Ford competition, circa 1987—representing the very beginning of a career that would later lead to Formula One.
This GPA full-face helmet is presented in Salo’s early, clean and purposeful design: a white base accented by horizontal blue striping, complemented by a “NESTE” visor strip and Finnish flag detailing, proudly reflecting his national identity. Period imagery confirms Salo wearing this exact style of helmet during his junior single-seater career, notably in Formula Ford, where he first established himself as one of Finland’s most promising young drivers.
The helmet shows clear and authentic signs of race use. The shell displays scattered chips, surface abrasions, and race grime consistent with competitive track action. The visor retains age-related wear and light scratching, while the original fittings and fixtures remain intact. Of particular note is the presence of an RAC approval sticker (expired 12/89), firmly placing the helmet within the correct period of use, along with internal manufacturer labeling and serial markings that further support authenticity.
The interior remains original, with visible wear to the lining and padding consistent with prolonged use in period. The helmet has not been restored, preserving its integrity as a genuine competition-used artifact.
Helmets from Mika Salo’s early career are exceptionally scarce. Unlike his later Formula One period, very few items from his Formula Ford and junior formula years have survived, making this a highly desirable piece for collectors focused on driver development history and “first chapter” memorabilia.
A compelling and authentic artifact from the grassroots origins of a Formula One driver—offering a rare opportunity to acquire a helmet from the earliest stage of Mika Salo’s racing journey.
