On October 25, 1983, Ayrton Senna drove a McLaren race car for the first time – it was the same team with which he would win three world titles, years later. Two days after becoming the British F3 champion, the Brazilian driver was given the chance by the British team, along with his rival Martin Brundle, who was the runner-up in the competition. Stefan Bellof, a young talent from Germany, was the third driver invited to take part in the day of testing at Silverstone, England.
As soon as he climbed into the #7 McLaren usually driven by John Watson, Senna impressed Ron Dennis, the team principal. In just six laps, the Brazilian was able to post a time of 1min14s8, beating Watson’s quickest time during the qualifying sessions for the 1983 British GP, which was 1min15s609.
“So far it´s been very good. Ayrton is considerably quicker than we´ve been on these tires on previous time we have been to Silverstone. Hopefully we can give him another run later and he will go a little bit better”, said Ron Dennis in an interview to reporter Reginaldo Leme, at the pits.
And Senna kept going faster and faster, in order to lower his time. The Brazilian took over Niki Lauda’s McLaren, whose engine was tuned differently, and posted an even better time of 1min13s9. By the end of the day, Senna had been quicker than Brundle and Belloff.
“I felt very confident in the car and it was extremely easy to drive. The speeds here at Silverstone are huge, but I felt relatively at ease in the car. My results were amazing, even better than I expected. I’m just now starting to realize how to win an F1 race – it’s more up to the car than the driver. Depending on how fast and easy to drive the car is, you become one or two seconds quicker or slower. But, in general, I’m really happy and I think this test was wonderful”, said Senna, also in an interview to the TV Globo journalist.
A few days after driving the McLaren, Senna tested a Toleman, the team with which he started his successful F1 trajectory. His first test with an F1 race car had been with a Williams, in June.

A little bit of history:
After his successful test with Williams in July 1983, Ayrton received several offers. The Brazilian would get the chance to test for McLaren after his British Formula 3 season, which happened at the end of October of 1983.
The McLaren test
As part of the McLaren Young Drivers test Ayrton Senna, Martin Brundle and Stefan Bellof came to Silverstone. Today, McLaren also performs this test as as the winner of the McLaren Autosport Award will be offered a test in an older model Formula 1 car by the team from Woking.
Brundle and Senna were present because of their performance in the British Formula 3 Championship, while Stefan Bellof was seen by McLaren as the successor of John Watson. Watson would leave his career as a Grand Prix driver with McLaren at the end of 1983, as the Briton entered into negotiations with Brabham.
McLaren wanted to see how Bellof compared to the British Formula 3 drivers. After his first attempt in the McLaren MP4-1 Ford Cosworth, Senna was taken out of the car. According to the engineers, he was too fast. After returning to the track he drove the fastest lap of the day, 1:13.9.
Ayrton came back in the pits and complained about not feeling very comfortable in the cockpit. He thought he couldn't operate the accelerator as well as he wanted. Yet he felt good: "I felt quite comfortable with the car. The McLaren Ford is an easy to drive car. The speed at Silverstone is quite high, but I still have a good feeling about this car. The results were excellent, much better than I expected.
"I am now going to realize how you could win a Formula 1 race. In Formula 1 you are always dependent on the material you get, the driver can be a part of that. As long as you have a good car you can easily handle it. I am very satisfied with this test and it was really great to do."
In an interview, Ron Dennis explained the following: "So far everything is going well. Ayrton is constantly faster on these tyres than we have been in the past. I hope we can let him ride another session at the end of the day. Maybe it will be even better then.

1984 Monaco GP original official poster
Regular price
The Monaco Grand Prix of 1984 may not be considered a classic but it highlighted the brilliance of a rising new generation of Formula 1 stars.
Qualifying had seen World Championship leader Alain Prost take pole position in his McLaren-TAG with Nigel Mansell's Lotus-Renault second, ahead of the two Ferraris of Rene Arnoux and Michele Alboreto and the two Renaults of Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay. The top 10 was completed by Andrea de Cesaris's Ligier-Renault, Niki Lauda's McLaren-TAG, Nelson Piquet's Brabham-BMW and Keke Rosberg's Williams-Honda. Qualifying was marked by a huge crash for Martin Brundle's Tyrrell at Tabac, the car ending up sliding down the road on its side. Brundle was confused but not hurt.
Race morning was marked by steady rain and conditions were so bad that the start of the race was delayed for 45 minutes. At the first corner the two Renaults collided and were out, Tambay suffering a broken leg, but Prost took the lead with Mansell chasing. Niki Lauda made a good start from eighth on the grid and by lap six had overtaken both Ferraris to move into third place.
Mansell fans were overjoyed on lap 11 when Nigel took the lead from Prost but five laps later he crashed heavily and the McLarens were 1-2. The remarkable Ayrton Senna was by then in third place in his Toleman (which was running on Michelin tires for the first time, the team having given up with Pirelli). He had started 13th but had picked his way up through the field.
On lap 19 he overtook Lauda to take second place and began to chase Prost, who was half a minute ahead. Five laps later Lauda crashed in Casino Square. As Senna chased Prost so attention focussed on Stefan Bellof's Tyrrell which was up to fourth place from last on the grid. It was a mighty performance. On lap 27 Bellof blasted past Arnoux's Ferrari to take third place and set off in pursuit of Senna. As Senna closed on Prost so Bellof closed on the pair of them.
And then on lap 31 the race was suddenly stopped. Prost was relieved, Senna was furious and Bellof was disappointed. One can only wonder what might have happened if the red flags had not come out.
Arnoux was fourth with Rosberg fifth and de Angelis sixth.

1985 Ayrtoj Senna personal Camel sunglasses with signed glass holder
Regular price
These sunglasses were used by Ayrton Senna during the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril. This was the race where Senna famously claimed his first ever Formula 1 victory in torrential rain while driving the Lotus 97T Renault for Team Lotus. The Camel branding was tied to Senna’s association with Lotus during the mid-1980s.
Branding: The glasses are marked with Camel on the lens, linked to the Camel tobacco sponsorship of Lotus F1 at the time.
Frame Style: Large aviator-style frames, typical of 1980s racing paddock fashion.
Frame Material: Gold-tone metallic frame with a double bridge design.
Lens: Brown gradient-tinted lenses, oversized for sun and glare protection.
Case: Yellow Camel-branded soft case, with an alternate version shown signed with Senna’s initials/autograph.
The sunglasses are iconic because they appear in many photographs of Senna at Estoril 1985, often seen with his Nacional cap, Lotus racing suit, and helmet in hand.
They are part of the Camel promotional items given to drivers and team members, but their provenance is elevated due to being visibly worn by Senna during one of the most historic weekends of his career.
Collectors value these not just as sunglasses, but as a piece of Ayrton Senna memorabilia tied to his first F1 win.
