1979 Patrick Tambay race used Helmet

PATRICK TAMBAY Original McLaren Formula One Helmet, circa 1979 GPA, Marlboro livery, signed
An exceptionally rare and visually striking original racing helmet worn by Patrick Tambay during his early Formula One career with McLaren in 1979, presented in the team’s iconic Marlboro colours. Manufactured by GPA (Groupe de Protection Automobile), the helmet embodies the distinctive aesthetic of late-1970s Grand Prix racing, a period defined by raw performance and bold commercial identity.
The helmet features a clean and instantly recognizable design: a blue crown, white midsection, and lower blue band, complemented by prominent Marlboro branding across the forehead and visor strip. The dark-tinted visor remains in place, with correct period fittings and hardware, while the shell retains its original finish with visible signs of authentic race use.
Of particular note, the helmet is personally inscribed and signed by Patrick Tambay on the right side, reading in French: “À Gilles, très sportivement et félicitations pour ta collection”, accompanied by Tambay’s signature and dated dedication. This intimate inscription adds a compelling personal dimension, linking the piece not only to the driver but also to its provenance within a collector’s context.
The rear and lower sections display TAMBAY name markings, further reinforcing its identity as a driver-specific helmet. The interior remains complete, showing period-correct construction, wear, and aging consistent with competition use. Close inspection reveals original padding, fittings, and GPA labeling, along with a visible serial marking.
Accompanied by period imagery showing Tambay in a McLaren Formula One car wearing a helmet of identical configuration, providing strong visual reference to its use in competition.
Patrick Tambay, a respected figure of the era, drove for McLaren during the 1979 season before achieving further success with Ferrari in the early 1980s. Helmets from his McLaren period are notably scarce, particularly those retaining original sponsor branding and signed inscriptions.
Condition: Overall very good, with clear and consistent signs of period use. Surface wear, minor abrasions, and aging to decals and interior lining. Interior padding shows expected deterioration commensurate with age. Signature remains bold and legible.
A rare and highly collectible artifact from the golden age of Formula One, combining period authenticity, iconic Marlboro-era McLaren livery, and a personal inscription from one of the sport’s notable drivers.

JEAN-PIERRE JABOUILLE Original Renault Formula One Helmet, circa 1979–1980 GPA, with integrated race radio system
A striking and highly evocative original racing helmet worn in period by Jean-Pierre Jabouille during Renault’s pioneering turbocharged Formula One era, circa 1979–1980. Finished in Jabouille’s iconic livery of vivid red with a central white longitudinal stripe and blue lower band, the helmet is emblazoned with period-correct elf Renault elf visor branding—synonymous with Renault’s factory team during one of the most transformative chapters in Grand Prix history.
Manufactured by GPA (Groupe de Protection Automobile), the helmet retains its original form and fittings, including the integrated wired radio communication system, a rare survival that underscores its direct competition use. The visor, lightly tinted in blue, bears the GPA mark and remains intact, while the shell displays honest signs of race wear—minor scuffs, marks, and patina consistent with authentic track use.
The left side features a “Giacobazzi – Lambrusco di Sorbara” sponsor decal, further anchoring the helmet in its precise historical and commercial context. The interior remains complete, with original lining and fittings preserved, offering a compelling glimpse into late-1970s driver equipment and ergonomics.
Accompanied by a period image depicting Jabouille in the Renault cockpit wearing a helmet of identical configuration, reinforcing the visual and historical correspondence of the present example.
Jabouille, a central figure in Renault’s Formula One program, famously secured the marque’s first Grand Prix victory at the 1979 French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois—an event that marked the arrival of turbocharged dominance in the sport. Helmets from this era, particularly those retaining original radio systems and sponsor markings, are exceedingly scarce.
Condition: Overall very good, with visible and appropriate signs of period use. Surface wear, light abrasions, and age-related marks throughout. Interior intact and commensurate with age. Radio cable present.
An exceptional and rare artifact from the dawn of Formula One’s turbo era, intimately connected to one of the sport’s most important technological revolutions.

1980 JOHN WATSON Original Race-Worn Helmet GPA SJ

JOHN WATSON Original Race-Worn Helmet 1980 Formula One Season-End McLaren F1 Team • GPA SJ
A highly গুরুত্বপূর্ণ and visually striking original race-worn GPA SJ helmet used by John Watson during the 1980 Formula One season, representing the closing phase of his campaign with McLaren in the iconic Marlboro era.
Finished in Watson’s unmistakable and minimalist design, the helmet features a metallic silver base with bold fluorescent orange banding wrapping around the visor and crown, complemented by black pinstriping—a clean yet instantly recognizable livery synonymous with Watson’s peak F1 years. The visor band prominently displays “Marlboro” branding alongside “JOHN WATSON” in period-correct lettering.
This example is a classic GPA SJ full-face helmet, widely used across Formula One in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The interior retains its original padding and structure, consistent with period construction.
Most notably, the helmet exhibits clear and compelling race-use patina, including:
Surface chips and abrasions across the crown and sides
Visor wear and age-related discoloration
Distinct impact damage/penetration point visible on the rear/side section of the shell
General wear consistent with competitive use during the high-risk turbo era
These features strongly support its authenticity as a genuinely used competition helmet and add significant historical character.
John Watson, a multiple Grand Prix winner, was a central figure in McLaren’s early-1980s resurgence, and helmets from this period—particularly authentic race-used examples—are increasingly scarce and highly sought after.
A rare opportunity to acquire a genuine, race-used Formula One helmet from one of the sport’s most respected drivers, embodying the raw and dangerous spirit of the era.
