Original Period Promotional Lightbox with Wall-Mount Brackets
A magnificent and exceptionally rare survivor of Formula One's most celebrated sponsorship identity: an original, double-sided illuminated John Player Special / Lotus lightbox sign, presented in the immortal black-and-gold JPS livery.
Each face of the sign carries the iconic interlocking JPS monogram in gold above "John Player Special" lettering in the marque's distinctive serif typeface, over the Lotus roundel bearing the ACBC badge, framed by the signature gold coachline border on gloss black. The lower field carries period partner branding — elf, Champion, and Pirelli — completing a composition that is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful graphic identities ever applied to motorsport.
According to the provenance accompanying this lot, the sign was displayed in the paddock at the JPS Lotus VIP hospitality village during the 1993 season, and it has never been commercially reproduced — this is a unique piece of team promotional infrastructure, not retail merchandise.
DESCRIPTION & CONSTRUCTION
The sign is of substantial professional construction: a deep-section lightbox cabinet in black-finished metal and ribbed profile, glazed on both faces with printed panels, and internally illuminated — the twin-faced format confirming its origin as a hanging or wall-projected paddock and hospitality sign, designed to be read from both directions. It retains its original electrical fitting and, importantly, its original cast-metal wall-mount brackets, allowing it to be installed exactly as deployed in period.
A maker's label to the cabinet identifies the manufacturer as a Brussels-based specialist plastics and signage house, consistent with professional European promotional production of the era.
The sign measures approximately 54 in × 32 in × 8 in (135 cm × 80 cm × 20 cm).
CONDITION
Offered in great overall condition commensurate with genuine period use: the printed faces remain strong, glossy, and vividly contrasted, with the gold graphics crisp throughout. The cabinet shows honest light wear to its edges and top surface — the patina of an authentic working paddock article rather than a reproduction. The illumination hardware is present with original plug fitting; as with all vintage electrical signage, professional inspection is recommended before sustained use.
THE JPS LOTUS LEGACY
No livery in the history of motor racing carries the aura of John Player Special and Lotus. From Emerson Fittipaldi's 1972 World Championship in the Lotus 72, through Mario Andretti's 1978 title in the ground-effect 79, to Ayrton Senna's electrifying seasons in the 97T and 98T, the black-and-gold cars defined an aesthetic that transcended the sport. Original JPS Lotus promotional material — particularly large-format illuminated signage produced for team and hospitality use rather than public sale — is among the most sought-after of all motorsport advertising artefacts, and double-sided examples with original mounting hardware essentially never appear on the open market.
For the collector of Lotus, of Senna-era Formula One, or of great advertising design in its own right, this is a genuine centrepiece opportunity.
