The single most recognisable personal artefact in all of Formula One: the blue Banco Nacional cap of Ayrton Senna — this example, according to the provenance accompanying the lot, personally used by Senna during the 1992 season, and hand-signed by him in black marker to the peak.
From his earliest seasons to his final morning at Imola, the royal-blue Nacional cap was inseparable from Senna's public image. He wore it on the podium, in the paddock, in interviews and in victory — honouring his personal sponsorship with Banco Nacional with a fidelity that made the cap itself an icon. Photographs of Senna without it are the exception. For collectors, the Nacional cap occupies the same place in Senna's iconography as the yellow helmet: it is, quite simply, his signature object.
DESCRIPTION
The cap is of Brazilian manufacture, in royal-blue cotton twill with the Nacional device and wordmark printed in white across the front panels, and the distinctive printed Ayrton Senna signature device in yellow to the side panel — the correct configuration of Senna's personal caps of the period, as supplied to him in Brazil.
Crucially, the interior construction supports its origin: the cap carries Brazilian maker's labelling, including the Santista tag and "Tecido de Qualidade" (quality fabric) label of the São Paulo textile house whose caps Senna wore in period, with Brazilian-marked taping to the interior seams. The interior sweatband carries a handwritten inventory inscription reading "AS 1992" — consistent with personal-effects cataloguing.
To the underside of the peak, Senna has applied his full flowing signature in black marker, accompanied by "92" — a dated autograph, applied to his own cap, elevating this piece into the top tier of Senna personal memorabilia.
THE 1992 SEASON
The 1992 season saw Senna, reigning triple World Champion, in his sixth year with McLaren-Honda, fighting a rearguard action against the technological supremacy of the Williams FW14B. It produced some of his most celebrated moments: his imperious victory at Monaco — the fifth of his record six wins in the Principality, achieved with Nigel Mansell swarming all over him in the closing laps in one of the most famous duels ever seen there — together with victories in Hungary and at Monza. It was a season that showcased Senna's genius in adversity, and the Nacional blue was present at every step of it.
CONDITION
The cap is offered in very good condition, with strong colour, clean panels, and the printed devices crisp throughout. The marker signature to the peak remains legible with softness consistent with period application and age; please refer to the photographs, which form part of the condition report.
SIGNIFICANCE
Senna personal effects of any kind are of exceptional rarity; a Nacional cap — used, signed, and dated — is among the most emotionally resonant objects a Senna collector can hope to own. Race helmets and suits reside largely in institutional and family collections. The cap, by contrast, was the object Senna himself chose to wear when he faced the world as a man rather than a driver — and that is precisely what makes it, for many collectors, the most personal Senna artefact of all.
