AYRTON SENNA — THE 1985 SEASON

The 1985 season marked Ayrton Senna's arrival at the front of Formula One. Having served a single apprentice year at Toleman — including his legendary wet-weather charge at Monaco in 1984 — the 25-year-old Brazilian joined Team Lotus and was immediately transformative.

At only his second race for the team, the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril, Senna delivered one of the defining drives in the sport's history: starting from pole position in torrential rain, he lapped the entire field up to second place, winning by over a minute in conditions that eliminated half the grid. It was his first Grand Prix victory, and it announced a generational talent to the world.

Senna went on to claim a second win that year at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps — again in treacherous mixed conditions — and established himself as the sport's foremost qualifier, taking seven pole positions in 1985, more than any other driver. He finished fourth in the World Drivers' Championship with 38 points, and the black-and-gold No. 12 Lotus became inseparable from his rising legend. For many collectors, the JPS Lotus era represents Senna at his purest: raw, fearless, and spectacularly fast.

THE LOTUS 97T

Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, the Lotus 97T was among the most competitive chassis of the 1985 season. Built around a carbon-fibre and Kevlar composite monocoque and powered by the Renault EF4B/EF15 V6 turbo engine — producing in excess of 750 bhp in qualifying trim — the 97T combined French turbo power with Lotus's aerodynamic sophistication.
