THIERRY BOUTSEN
Original Race-Worn Helmet with Integrated Radio System
Ligier JS35 • Formula One World Championship, 1991

An exceptional and highly evocative survivor from the golden era of early-1990s Formula One, this original race-worn helmet was used by Thierry Boutsen during the 1991 FIA Formula One World Championship while driving for Equipe Ligier.

Crafted by Arai and finished in Boutsen’s distinctive livery, the helmet features the iconic Gitanes Blondes and Elf sponsorship, rendered in bold tricolour striping across a deep black ground. The aerodynamic shell retains its period-correct visor configuration, complete with “GITANES” banner and “PHENIX” branding to the chin, while the rear and crown display Arai and Elf insignia consistent with documented race imagery from the season.

Most notably, the helmet is fitted with its original integrated radio communication system, including external connector and internal wiring—an increasingly scarce and desirable feature that underscores its authentic race use. The presence of this system places the piece firmly within the professional race environment, offering a tangible connection to pit-to-driver communication during competition.

The interior retains its original lining and manufacturer’s label, consistent with early-1990s Arai production, showing appropriate wear commensurate with race use. The exterior shell displays minor surface marks and patina, further supporting its authenticity and use in period.

Accompanied by reference imagery of Boutsen wearing an identical helmet design in the Ligier cockpit, the present example matches key visual markers including sponsor placement, striping geometry, and radio configuration.

Thierry Boutsen, a three-time Grand Prix winner, remains one of Belgium’s most accomplished Formula One drivers. His tenure with Ligier in 1991 represents a notable chapter in both his career and the team’s history, making surviving artifacts from this period particularly sought after.

A rare opportunity to acquire a fully original, race-used Formula One helmet complete with period radio equipment—an evocative and highly collectible piece from the pinnacle of motorsport.
