Stand 21 & The Nomex Standard

Stand 21 was — and remains — one of the most respected names in motorsport safety. In the 1980s, their Nomex-constructed fireproof undergarments were among the most advanced available to Formula One drivers, providing a critical additional layer of fire resistance beneath the outer race suit. For a driver of Senna's intensity and physical commitment, these garments were not accessories — they were essential protection, worn through qualifying sessions, race starts, and the full physical demands of a sixteen-round World Championship season.

The 1987 Season — Context & Significance

This undershirt was worn during one of the most technically remarkable and emotionally significant seasons of Senna's career. Piloting the revolutionary Lotus 99T — fitted with computer-controlled active suspension and the Honda Twin-Turbo engine — Senna drove a car that could stay flat over bumps, preserve tyres, and run less wing for more top speed.

Senna achieved two race victories in 1987, at the Monaco Grand Prix and the Detroit Grand Prix, as well as six other podiums throughout the season — four second places and two third places — finishing third in the Drivers' Championship. These wins, and the additional podiums, represented a feat never to be repeated thereafter in F1 by a Lotus — marking the last time the great team would stand on the top step of a Grand Prix podium.

It was his final season in yellow and blue. The following year, Senna moved to McLaren and claimed the first of his three World Championships. This garment belongs to the final chapter of that Lotus story — the last season of a partnership that had launched one of the greatest careers in sport.

Original Stand 21 Nomex garments from Senna's 1987 Lotus season are extraordinarily rare — among the few made with specific period detailing unique to that championship year. Race-worn fireproof underwear almost never survives in collectible form; it was functional equipment, not considered for preservation at the time. Of all the pieces of motorsport memorabilia that exist in the world, few can lay claim to the extraordinary historical weight carried by this item. This Dunlop slick karting rear tyre, mounted on its original aluminium wheel, was raced by Ayrton Senna at the inaugural Elf Masters Karting event, held at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy on 18–19 December 1993 — an occasion that would become, in the cruellest twist of fate, Ayrton Senna's final competitive race.

Five months later, he was gone.

The Signatures

Applied in white marker directly onto the rubber tyre surface, the piece bears Ayrton Senna's bold, flowing signature, accompanied by the year and the inscription "Bercy" — a precise, event-specific dedication that places this tyre unambiguously at one of the most emotionally charged moments in motorsport history.

Alongside it, equally in white marker, appears the unmistakable signature of Alain Prost — Senna's greatest rival, his most complex adversary, and the man who stood on the opposite side of one of sport's most legendary and passionate feuds. That both men signed the same piece makes this a document of reconciliation as much as of competition.

The Kart

The competitors raced identical arrive-and-drive specification karts on the indoor circuit constructed within the Bercy arena — compact, highly responsive machines fitted with Dunlop slick tyres, demanding the precise, aggressive, and deeply physical driving style that Senna himself described vividly after the event: "You have to drive sideways because go-karts are small, short-wheelbase and very quick to react. You are always sideways at some stage of the corner... In a kart, you have to be hard and aggressive, but also precise."

The Event & The Race

The Masters Karting was organised by former Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff, with the goal of bringing together the best performers from all disciplines of motorsport — from go-karting to Formula 1 — and having them compete together in a spectacle for the fans. The stage was an indoor circuit in the Paris-Bercy Sports Palace.

Teams were formed with a Formula 1 driver and a karting rookie. Two races were held, and the second was the one that truly captured the public's imagination, since in the first race both Senna and Prost had difficulties with their karts.

In race 2, Andrea de Cesaris dominated much of the race, but always with Senna and Prost on his heels — the fight for second place between the former McLaren teammates intense for much of the event, with Senna coming out ahead after some great battles.

The battle saw Senna overtake Prost and challenge De Cesaris for the lead, before he was forced to retire with mechanical problems. Prost managed to pass De Cesaris and go on to win. For Ayrton Senna, it would be his last competitive karting race. Indeed, it would be his last competitive race of any kind. He would lose his life at Imola the following May.

The image of Senna and Prost — former enemies, reluctant friends — dicing wheel-to-wheel on a tiny indoor kart circuit in Paris that December evening, watched by a passionate crowd, remains one of the most poignant vignettes in all of sport.

Signed Senna material from the Bercy event is extraordinarily scarce. Ayrton Senna – Race-Used OMP Driving Gloves (1991 Formula One Season)
A remarkable and deeply personal piece of Formula One history, this pair of OMP racing gloves was race-used by legendary three-time World Champion Ayrton Senna during the 1991 Formula One World Championship season — the year Senna secured his third and final F1 World Title with McLaren-Honda.

Constructed in Senna’s iconic red-and-white OMP configuration, the gloves exhibit exceptional and unmistakable signs of authentic race use throughout. Heavy wear is visible across the palms and finger areas, particularly on the right glove, which displays significant abrasion consistent with Senna’s aggressive and precise driving style.

Most notably, the interior of the right glove retains traces of Ayrton Senna’s blood — a powerful and intimate detail rarely encountered in motorsport memorabilia. The blood transfer and wear patterns are understood to have resulted from continual friction between Senna’s hand, the cockpit interior, and the manual gearbox shifter during competition use. The right glove shows substantial degradation and rubbing where it repeatedly contacted the cockpit and gear lever throughout race conditions, further reinforcing the authenticity and intensity of use.

The gloves are accompanied by an original OMP Racing S.r.l. letter dated March 10, 2006, signed by Marketing Manager Luigi Rossi, confirming that the gloves depicted in the accompanying photographs were produced by OMP for Ayrton Senna in 1991. The documentation originates directly from OMP’s headquarters in Ronco Scrivia, Genova, Italy.

Few artifacts capture the human intensity of Formula One competition like a pair of genuinely race-used gloves. Unlike helmets or suits, gloves represent the direct connection between driver and machine — every steering correction, every gear change, every physical demand transmitted through them.
